The White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.

In a significant move for their retooling roster, the American League club have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The agreement grants a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16M for the next season and $17M for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for earning the top rookie honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Historical Context

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, joins a young core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a last-place season, finishing last in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in 892 games. He started playing mostly at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off two-base hit that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic one-run win. The following day in the title match against the USA, he slugged a tying shot in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The power hitter is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on Monday.
