The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
