The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is experiencing a swift change. Fresh analysis finds that New England is warming more quickly than almost anywhere else on the globe. Breakneck Pace of Transformation The velocity of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the contiguous United States, as per the study. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently increased notably in the last half-decade. "Temperatures is not only increasing, it's speeding up," said a primary researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for millennia." The research positions the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, alongside the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the American South," the researcher added. Analysis Methodology and Findings For the analysis, researchers examined multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. They found that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe. "This represents very fast warming, which is concerning," said the researcher. Key Warming Trends Nighttime temperatures are rising faster than daytime temperatures. Winters are warming at double the speed of other times of year. The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being diminished. Marine Influences and the "Energy Storage" A major reason for this exceptional build-up of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The world's oceans are absorbing the vast majority of the excess heat captured by greenhouse gases. In the north Atlantic, an influx of meltwater from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns. "Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being held in the sea like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat." Impacts on Life and Extremes Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered extreme climate events in the past decade, including enormous floods and prolonged dry spells. The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic aspects of regional life: Maple syrup production is facing challenges by changing seasonal patterns. Winter sports are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been called off or moved repeatedly due to a lack of ice. Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of inadequate snow. "I live just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much disappeared from large parts of southern New England."
