Learners Protest Over AI-Delivered University Class: "We Could Have Simply Asked ChatGPT"

Several learners at an English institution have expressed strong disappointment when realizing their technology program was mostly delivered through automated systems.

Career Change Dreams Shattered

One student and Owen were among 41 enrollees who joined a programming module hoping to switch into software engineering through a publicly-supported training scheme.

Yet the anticipations were rapidly reduced when they encountered AI-generated slides being presented by an AI voiceover.

“If we turned in projects that was created by AI, we would be removed from the university,” stated James during a captured discussion with his lecturer.

Repeated Complaints and University Response

Students multiple times brought up worries about the computer-generated resources, yet the university looks to have persisted using AI-generated content.

Interestingly, the college maintains firm policies restricting learner use of AI, stating that presenting AI-generated work equals academic misconduct.

Expanding Pattern in Universities

This case reflects a broader movement across educational institutions increasingly using AI tools for teaching, content creation, and individual assessment.

  • Current studies suggest nearly a fourth of UK educators now use AI in their educational practices
  • Official papers have hailed generative AI's ability to transform education
  • Yet many learners find the experience discouraging rather than transformative

Obvious Indications of Automated Creation

Participants detected various clues indicating computer-created content:

  1. Inconsistent language usage between American and British English
  2. Suspicious file labels
  3. Surface-level information with occasional allusions to inappropriate US laws
  4. Audio unexpectedly shifting to a different accent before switching back

Learner Dissatisfaction and Future Anxieties

One student shared significant anxiety about his career trajectory, saying he felt trapped with this course” after dedicating significant time.

Another participant, experiencing a career change, stated he had selected the program for valuable knowledge rather than only a credential.

“Sitting there with resources that is just unworthy of someone's time,” he remarked, “when you could be devoting that time genuinely participating in something valuable, is really frustrating.”

In spite of university claims about upholding learning outcomes, learners felt the last-minute inclusion of actual teachers was “too little, too late” to address their basic complaints.
