Fireworks and a Toast to Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Deal to Return Hostages

The announcement regarding a deal expected to result in the freeing captives detained within Gaza for more than two years has caused delight and relief throughout the nation.

A group that has advocated for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza voiced ā€œprofound gratitudeā€ for what it called an ā€œhistoric breakthroughā€.

The deal—still requiring approved by Israel’s war cabinet—involves the release of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees serving life sentences in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.

So far, 148 hostages have been returned—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.

Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square

Joyous gatherings have unfolded at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled before the agreement’s signing.

The gathering began clapping and moving to music under US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a sign that read: ā€œWe adore Trump.ā€

ā€œThis is a wondrous day,ā€ the woman said.

A different person, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the people celebrating.

ā€œI’m very excited—it’s such a relief,ā€ she said. ā€œWe must witness them come back home to their families.ā€

Families Celebrate with Fireworks

The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news that he would be returned home.

ā€œThey are returning!... Matan is coming home!ā€ Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her daughter.

Viki Cohen, the parent of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: ā€œMy son, you are returning home.ā€

The delight was palpable throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv after the announcement.

Released Captives Say Prayers and Toasts

Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then cheering ā€œL’chaimā€, meaning ā€œfor lifeā€. She has advocated for the freedom of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.

Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: ā€œMy dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.ā€

Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, and her body found in a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has been joining other captives’ relatives in pushing for an agreement which ensures the homecoming of all those still detained within Gaza.

ā€œI can’t quite believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and now it’s here,ā€ he said.

He stated he was ā€œbrokenā€ that Carmel would not be among those returning to their homes yet felt ā€œglowing with joyā€ for the relatives of the captives who are finally coming back.

Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.

Guarded Hope from Relatives

Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living ā€œa dream stateā€.

ā€œWe’re more than grateful to President Trump and all he has accomplished for us. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan feels closer than ever,ā€ she said.

However, she warned that it remained too soon to celebrate.

ā€œBefore the final captive returns, we’re not opening the champagne. We will continue struggling... until the end,ā€ she said.

ā€œSo many things can happen up to the final instant which is why we’re being so, so careful. We just want to express gratitude to all who was involved in the work and make sure this deal is finalized... We shall rejoice only once we have the last hostage back home.ā€

Eitan was captured from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was freed from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
