🔗 Share this article Anthony Barry Explains The Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear. A decade ago, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Now, his attention is fixed supporting Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup next summer. His path from athlete to trainer started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling. Rapid Rise His advancement has been remarkable. Beginning with his first major job, he developed a standing with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it. “Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a structured plan that allows us for optimal success.” Detail-Oriented Approach Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their methods feature psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes the England collective and dislikes phrases including "pause". “You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.” Driven Leaders The assistant coach says and the head coach as highly ambitious. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and we dedicate long hours toward. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of changes and to lead and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear. “There are 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from thought to data to knowledge to execution. “To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use all the time available since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.” Final Qualifiers He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured qualification after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum. “Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects from the top division,” he comments. “The fitness, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape not protective gear. “To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and more in doing. “There are morale boosts available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared now. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.” Thirst for Improvement The coach's thirst for development is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise. He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff while keeping Barry. Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership like previous management pairs. “Thomas is unique {in terms of personality and methodology|in character and approach|
